About Rebekahs
On September 20, 1851, IOOF became the first national fraternity to accept both men and women when it formed the Daughters of Rebekah, known today as Rebekahs. Schuyler Colfax, [Vice President of the United States (1869–1873) under President Ulysses S. Grant], was the force behind the movement.

What Does It Mean To Be A Rebekah?

In the Rebekah degree the stories of prominent women of the Bible are used to express universal traits that exemplify honorable living and courageous women; that teach exemplary living grounded in Friendship, Love and Truth, the cornerstone for both Odd Fellows and Rebekahs. The character of Rebekah exemplifies beauty, grace, patience, hospitality and a humble spirit of service to others in Biblical stories and serves as the name of this degree.

Symbols of Rebekah Fellowship:
Beehive (Cooperative Industry)
Moon and 7 Stars (Universal Order)
The Lily (The Emblem of Purity)
The Dove (Peace and Goodwill)
Men and women over age 16 may apply to become Rebekahs. All nationalities and cultures are welcome to apply to join.

The only condition placed on applicants is that they be of good moral character and believe in a Supreme Being. Odd Fellows and Rebekahs do not discuss religion or politics.

Other Degrees
Once women have received the Rebekah Degree they are entitled to achieve other degrees listed below. They include the Ladies Encampment Auxiliary degrees, the Encampment (LEA) degree, and the Ladies Auxiliary Patriarchs Militant Degree as well as Odd Fellow degrees.

Degrees of Ladies Encampment Auxiliary (LEA)
The colors of the order are Royal Purple and Gold as a symbol of royalty. The Patriarchs and Matriarchs were the leaders of their people and as such they modeled faith, hope, and charity. The Shepard’s Crook is a symbol of their duty to protect their flocks. Matriarchs of the Encampment degree are required to relieve the sick and distressed with gentleness, compassion and sympathy.

The Degrees of the LEA
All of the degrees of Odd Fellowship and the Rebekahs are open to both men and women of good moral character who believe in a supreme being. The aim of the LEA is the same as the men’s Encampment degree, yet women of this degree are called Matriarchs while the men are addressed as Patriarchs. Both groups goal is to live up to the “Golden Rule.”

Ladies Auxiliary Patriarchs Militant (LAPM)
The White Rose is the symbol of purity and the symbol of this degree.

The LAPM Degree

The regalia of the Ladies Auxiliary Patriarchs Militant is the nurse’s uniform which signifies the willingness to administer to those in distress or need. The guiding motto is Friendship, Love, Charity and Fidelity, to make the lives of others brighter and happier now, since our days are numbered.

Rebekah Children's Services is a public benefit corporation founded in 1897 by the California Rebekah Lodge as an orphanage. They now provide foster care placement and support services, parent support, prevention and early specific needs of the child and family whenever categorical services do not work. Their services include outpatient therapy, education to the community, and behavioral health care services to children and families living in Santa Clara, Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties, through a central care facility in Gilroy California.

Rebekah also shares in retirement community opportunities through Odd Fellows Homes of California, one of which is nearby in Saratoga California.
